The club organises tennis for adult members in a variety of formats. A good percentage of members do not wish to play in teams and are mainly interested in ‘social tennis’ or ‘arranged games’ and the club caters for these players as follows:
Tuesday 6.00pm onwards is Tuesday League
All 7 courts are used and everyone is welcome. Details are in the competition section
and this is a very popular evening and an ideal way to improve your tennis and meet
other players of your own ability. The bar is open all evening and hot snacks are usually
available.
Friday 6.30pm onwards is Friday social night.
Just come along and play – there will usually be a committee member there to organise
games and try to make sure players are evenly matched. It is all doubles play and purely
a fun evening and players of all standards are welcome. Once again the bar is open and
people tend to come down to play and stay, or just come along for a drink and chat and a
game or two of pool. It is a nice evening, particularly in the warm summer months
watching tennis from the viewing verandah with a nice cold drink from the bar.
Sunday 10.30am to 11.30 am is beginners squad coaching.

weeks – non members must join the introduction group.
Sunday 10.30 to lunch time is social tennis morning.
The format is all doubles play with partners changing at the end of each set. The bar is open
afterwards for that refreshing ‘thirst quencher’.
The rest of the week is given over to ‘arranged games’. This means that members can book a one and a half hour slot and play with any other members that they choose. Traditionally this means that players organise a regular doubles or singles with members of their own standard but does also allow tournaments to be played, practice sessions arranged and generally gives flexibility to the tennis program. To book a court, full members simply enter the name of the players in the booking folder kept in the clubhouse. Courts can be booked up to 8 days in advance. In peak times only 2 singles may be played during any single time slot.
Matches and Team Tennis
The club runs 3 Essex Summer and Winter League Men’s teams plus 2 Ladies Summer and Winter League teams plus a ladies and men’s veteran league team. These matches are played at the weekends, usually in the afternoon. The format does vary, depending on division but is always doubles play, in teams of 4 or 6. In some divisions this can be only 4 sets in the afternoon but in some of the higher divisions it can be 3 matches, with each match being the best of 3 sets for each pair! We also run teams in local leagues for both women and men.
The standard of all of these teams does vary dramatically and ranges from lower divisions in the local leagues to teams that are national champions. We can therefore offer competitive tennis to players of almost every standard and the depth and variety of tennis we can offer is unmatched by any other club, not only in this area, but also in Essex. The chance to play against such a variety of players does mean that new members quickly improve, whatever their level when they join. Players looking for competitive tennis may also be interested in our Thursday evening match training squad. It takes place from 19.00 till dark and focuses on doubles play and tactics. The cost is £5.00 per session and includes all coaching fees. For information contact the coaching team.
